Chelsea, Liverpool Talents Of Nigerian Parentage Feature As England Are Crowned World Champions

England are U20 World Cup champions following their hard-fought 1-0 win over Venezuela at the Suwon World Cup Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Five players of Nigerian descent in Fikayo Tomori, Dominic Solanke (both Chelsea), Josh Onomah (Tottenham Hotspur), Ademola Lookman (Everton) and Sheyi Ojo (Liverpool) tasted action for the Young Lions, while Ovie Ejaria failed to come off the bench for the second game in a row.

On ten minutes, Solanke had a glorious opportunity to give England the lead but did not hit the ball a little better, before another chance came the way of the Liverpool-bound striker after excellent play by Josh Onomah, who took three Venezuelans out.

Ademola Lookman’s lovely strike in the 22nd minute was well saved by Venezuela goalkeeper Fariñez.

Calvert-Lewin gave England the lead ten minutes before half time, he was alert to tuck away a loose ball after the goalkeeper had saved his initial shot.

On 55 minutes, Onomah was unlucky not to double England’s advantage as he rattled the crossbar with an incredible strike from distance.

The South Americans were the better team in the second half but failed to convert their dominance into goals, and Peñaranda’s penalty was saved by Woodman with 14 minutes to play.
